Aquatic Physical Therapy
Park Ridge Hospital Rehab Services now offers Aquatic Physical Therapy for qualifying patients. We have provided this service since May, 2004, and we are pleased to continue this program at the new Lelia Patterson Center, across the street from Park Ridge Hospital at the intersection of Howard Gap Road and Naples Road. We are able to treat up to four patients per day. This program uses warm water, hot water, and/or cool water pools based on each patient’s specific needs.
The benefits of this mode of therapy include:
decreased body weight, which lessens stress on weight bearing joints such as the lower back, hips, knees and ankles
increased circulation
muscle relaxation
quicker recovery of motion following surgery
pain management
The following diagnoses have proven to respond well to this form of therapy:
Post-surgical Rehabilitation: Knees, Hips, Neck, Back, Shoulder
Arthritis: Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis
Fractures: Extremities and compression fractures in back
Osteoporosis
Mastectomy
Neurological conditions: Strokes, head injuries, post-polio, Multiple Sclerosis, ALS (Lou Gherig’s Disease)
Fibromyalgia
Pregnancy
Gait and balance dysfunction
Generalized weakness and fatigue
Peripheral neuropathy or foot pain
Acute or chronic pain
Reflex Sympathetic Dystropy Syndrome (RSD)
Patients do not need to be able to swim. Most patients who are a little uncomfortable in water do well after several visits; however, we do not recommend aquatic physical therapy for someone who experiences excessive fear of water.
Patients must be continent at all times and must be able to safely change clothes and get to the pool independently or with family/caretaker assistance. We do have a special handicap changing room and a lift for getting into the pool for non-ambulatory patients.
Medicare and post insurance will cover aquatic physical therapy with a physician’s prescription, but the prescription must specify aquatic therapy.
For more information about our Aquatic Physical Therapy program, call (828) 681-2162.
